How to fix your sec status - The fast way

Having had to bring up my sec status from “big bad outlaw” *cough* back to “acceptable”, I had some time to figure out how to go about it the most efficient way. Since many of you will want to know, here's a little how-to guide.

How security boosts work

Security boosts are apparently tied in with the bounties, i.e. the higher a rat's bounty, the higher the security boost you will get from it. Unlike bounties though, you don't get a security boost for every npc you kill. Instead, it works like this:

  • When you kill an NPC with a bounty, a 15 minute timer starts. After these 15 minutes, you will get your security boost. It's more complicated than that though:
    • If you kill another NPC with a lower bounty within these 15 minutes, it is simply ignored
    • If you kill another NPC with a higher bounty within these 15 minutes, the timer is restarted.

Considering that, the most efficient way to raise sec status would be to kill a high bounty npc, and to kill another one right after the 15 minute timer is over. How would you do that most effectively? Here's how I do it:

  1. Go to 0.0 and find the best dual or triple battleship spawn that you can find (Make sure you can tank them, ideally indefinitely)
  2. Kill one of the battleships, don't touch any of the smaller ships. Look at the clock when it pops
  3. Bump down the second battleship's shields and armor a bit, keep it at low levels - but take care not to kill it yet
  4. Check the clock: When your 10 minutes timer nears completion, open your character sheet and look at the Security Status tab. Keep refreshing that tab by cycling between another tab and security status. As soon as you see a new entry with the current timestamp appear there, blast full hell out of the 2nd battleship.
  5. wait for a respawn, rinse, repeat. Since the respawn timer for belt rat spawns is usually around 15 minutes, you should be able to kill one every 10 minutes, thus effectively getting yourself a security boost every 10-11mins.

Note: You can receive this Security Status boost every 15 minutes per system – Rotating between systems, while only killing one Battleship per system, will greatly increase the amount of Security Status boosts you receive. -Rave

On Numbers

If you look at your character sheet, security status tab. If you're as easily confused as me, you won't understand what the percentage change listed means. As far as I've gathered, a change of 0.20% is equivalent to a security status change from -2.1 to -2.08.

The best BSs I've found in Syndicate (near Vestouve) have a bounty of 950k, and they give a sec boost of 0.19%. So you will have to kill 5-6 of them to gain 0.1 point of sec status. With the method I described above, that should be doable within about one hour.

Security Status and Travel

For the record, here's where you should not travel if your security status gets too low:

  • -1.9 can enter all systems
  • -2.4 can enter up to (and including) 0.9
  • -2.9 can enter up to (and including) 0.8
  • -3.4 can enter up to (and including) 0.7
  • -3.9 can enter up to (and including) 0.6
  • -4.4 can enter up to (and including) 0.5
  • -4.5 and below cannot enter any system higher than 0.4. Well, you can, but you will have to face the faction navy.

-5.0 are free game to everyone everywhere, shootable and poddable without concord or sentry gun intervention. Sounds nasty, right? Well, there is a plus side to being red and flashy: People are afraid of you, and prone to act irrationally in your presence… but I'll leave that area to our PsyOps experts.
